What To Do if Your Dog is Sad or Depressed

Like humans, some dogs can occasionally suffer from bouts of depression and melancholy. And if your dog’s behavior changes, even if you suspect you know why, it’s a good idea to first of all check in with your vet and make sure your dog’s sad mood does not signal a medical problem. Read more to find out what to do next.

The good news is, dog sadness usually doesn’t last long!

If your dog has a temporary case of the blues, you can comfort them and help change their mood by doing something positive together. For example:

  • Play with a favorite toy
  • Go for a brisk walk
  • Set up a doggy playdate with another canine friend
  • Go for a ride in the car
  • Offer a special treat

  1. I’m sad when my dog is sad… Seriously I love Brutus and if he’s ever moping around I’ll take him for a walk or to the dog park out near Dillon Park and he usually starts acting much better quickly. He just has so much energy!

  2. Hopefully, the dog’s depression doesn’t really last long. For the most part I haven’t experienced this with any dog I’ve had but I guess dogs too can get lonely or sad. Dog walks are one of my favorite ways to get some exercise and I’m committed to walking my pups at least 3 days each week.

    • The dog walks have been great for my big boy too. The more tired he is, the happier we both are! Do Great Danes ever calm down and chill? My boy is almost 2 and he wakes me up ready to play. He’s so restless.

      • Cynthia, the consistent dog walks each week have made my pups much more relaxed with down time at home!
